Homeless.ws was inspired by reading a copy of the Big Issue. It’s not the first copy I’ve bought but it’s the first one I’ve read properly. I realised how many pre-conceptions we have about homeless people that are just wrong. For example, we’re told in my hometown Nottingham (by billboards that I think have been put in place by the Council) not to give money to homeless people because they’ll buy drugs and alcohol with it. But so what. There are plenty of people falling out the clubs at 3am in the morning, pissed up and on drugs. I drink regularly enough. And the accounts in the Big Issue really reinforce the message that people aren’t just homeless because they don’t want to work. So Homeless.ws will be our small contribution towards opening people’s eyes and minds. I’m really pleased to get such a great domain for this project. I hope when we’ve built up the traffic I’ll be able to get some of the local institutions here in Nottingham on board, perhaps to give us a bit of content and to raise their own profiles, as most don’t seem to have a website themselves.
